The burial chamber is cut into the bedrock below the mastaba. Before my father’s body was placed in the chamber, it was preserved through a process called mummification. His internal organs were removed and stored in special containers, called canopic jars. Then, his body was covered in salt, which helped to dry it out. After his body was dried out, it was wrapped in linen bandages and placed in a coffin. Once the coffin was placed in the chamber, the shaft was filled and sealed for eternity.
