"Every day we get something like this going, is a great day," said Stu Lichter, president and founder of Industrial Realty Group ("IRG" - IndustrialRealtyGroup.com), moments before the Jan. 3, 2013 Elio Motors (ElioMotors.com) press conference announcing its new manufacturing plant at the former GM Shreveport Assembly and Stamping Plant in Louisiana.
"(We) just love making these things happen," Lichter added.
"Paul (Elio, founder and president of Elio Motors, maker of The Elio) is either a crazy lunatic, or he's the next Henry Ford."
"The concept of this car is so different, than anything on the market: the price point, the front-to-back seating, the way he intends to finance it and sell it. He's essentially reinvented the automobile industry, assuming he gets it launched," Lichter continued. "I have no doubt it will be a gigantic success."
Lichter is an investor in Elio Motors, having loaned the company $10 million so it could purchase the former GM Shreveport Assembly and Stamping Plant. "The idea that a gas car can get 70 or 80 miles-per-gallon, is just unbelievable. And the idea that it can have a price point only slightly more than half the price of the next-cheapest car in America, is pretty unbelievable," he said.
"When I told him this was the place he had to operate, it was because, this, essentially, was General Motors' most modern car plant," Lichter said. "It's fully equipped. And the amount of money it saves in start-up costs? I can't even calculate. There's something like, $500 million worth of equipment sitting in this plant. You just turn it on."
"A, this was probably the most modern car plant in America, and it's laid out in a way that it breaks up into multi-tenant use a lot easier than a lot of the facilities that we work on. So, it's really good. Has a terrific infrastructure. And Louisiana is a good place to do business," said Lichter.
The Shreveport plant was marketed by The RACER Trust (RACERtrust.org), a private trust created by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to clean up and position for redevelopment a portfolio of properties formerly owned by GM. The motto of The RACER Trust, run by Trustee Elliott Laws, is, quite appropriately, "Empowering America's Auto Communities." The acronym stands for "Revitalizing Auto Communities Environmental Response."
