Comcast SportsNet Chicago has produced an emotional documentary about Rocky Clark, the Chicago area high school football player who was paralyzed after a tough hit in a game. "Rocky Clark: The Legacy Lives On" will look at the inspirational story of Clark's life after his paralysis and the sad story of his death months after his insurance ran out.
Rasul "Rocky" Clark was a running back for Blue Island's Eisenhower High School in 2000. On September 15, 2000, in a game against Oak Forest High School, Rocky Clark took a hard, but fairly routine tackle. This came on just the fourth play of the game. Clark suffered two broken vertebrae in his neck and a devastating spinal cord injury, leaving him a quadriplegic. He was just 16 years old.
Using the insurance money from High School District 218's policy, Rocky Clark was get the medical, therapeutic, and 24 hour nursing help he needed to be able to rise above this tragedy. He graduated High School, attended junior college at South Suburban College, and even was able to go back and help coach his former high school football team.
Less than ten years after the football accident happened, Rocky Clark's mother Annette received a two-sentence letter from the insurance company, notifying her that the money had run out and that the company would no longer cover any more of the young man's medical bills. Annette Clark had to rely on Medicaid and some state support, but it wasn't enough. Rocky Clark passed away months later. Rocky Clark died on January 5th of this year at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, after his lungs and kidneys failed him.
CSN Chicago's documentary will look at the impact that Rocky Clark's life and death have had on so many. The program features interviews with his family, friends, coaches, nurses, state representatives, Chicago Bears receiver Earl Bennett, and others.
The poignant 30-minute special was produced and edited by CSN Chicago's Emmy Award-winning creative force, Sarah Lauch. It will debut on the station later this month, just shy of the one-year anniversary of Rocky Clark's passing.
"Rocky Clark: The Legacy Lives On" will air on Sunday, December 23rd at 7:30pm. For those who miss the initial showing of the special, Comcast SportsNet is planning on re-airing it on December 25th at 9:30pm, December 31st at 9:00pm, January 5th (the one year anniversary of Rocky Clark's passing) at 7:00pm, and January 7th at 7:00pm.
