Watch Part 1/2: New Year's In Zanzibar
Watch Part 2/2: Exploring The Nile
I spent my first Winter Break of college in Kayunga, Uganda, working at a rural hospital. During my stay, I took two mini holidays, the first in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and the second in Jinja, Uganda. This is the second and final video of my trip to Africa.
From Kayunga District Hospital, I took a boda-boda (motorcycle) to Jinja, Uganda. I spent the first day trekking Mariba Rainforest and the second boating the Nile River. My boda-boda driver drove me deep into the forest until his motorcycle couldn't go any further, and I continued on foot. After emerging from the forest, I found a local to take me on his boat and he showed me where Bujagali, the herbsman who the "Spirit of the Nile" is embodied in, lives and treats his patients. From a concealed layer of brush are two cavern entrances that he holds his appointments. After the animal sacrifices and herb treatments, the patient is sent through the narrow tunnel into the cave system to emerge from the other entrance. Within the system of tunnels is a cave that opens up and can hold 3000 people. But ever since the dam was built and the Nile River by Lake Victoria flooded, patients have a even harder time figuring their way through the maze. I only made it through several tunnels before the bat bites were too much to handle and had to turn back. Just imagine scaling vertical passages and tunnels half-filled with water!
Sorry for the choppiness of the video. I ran out of battery and didn't have enough footage to create smooth transitions. Whatevs! Also the quality (vimeo allows only 1 HD video a week. I'll re-upload later).
