The movie, Remember The Titans, showed us how a group of young men who wore the same uniforms, who played the same game, became a team despite their ethnic differences. The whole was greater than the sum of the parts.
The Apostle Paul has been doing much the same thing with the church in Corinth. He has been saying you all are different, but understand the differences as part of a unified whole.
The purpose of the gifts is service. Serving one another as part of an interdependent community is central to the Body of Christ. Serving was central to Jesus' stated purpose for coming to this planet.
