"David is a young man trying to escape a dark past, created by his father abandoning him as a child. Leaving a stint in prison, he is contacted by his dying father and given one final task to do for him - to spread his ashes when he passes. Eager to live a life without being in his dad's shadow, David agrees. But, when the ashes are stolen by a one night stand, David takes it upon himself to find his father's remains, embarking on a journey that will take him to his darkest point and beyond to discover the truth..."
This is my first feature film, thanks to funds generously donated by Glenn Davidson and Ed Johnson.
I wrote the script in a time of great change in my life. Work in the film industry was drying up fast after the one-two punch of the writer's strike and the economy crashing and I had to move back home to deal with the debts that film school left me with. In this period of frustration and anger, I chose to make my own movie and to shoot it where I am from, in the area in and around Victoria, BC.
After securing money from the aforementioned investors, I spent three months in pre-production and had a fifteen day shooting schedule. Most people would tell you that you can only ever have two of the three sides of production go well and this was definitely the case with this beast. Post-production took over a year due to scheduling conflicts, miscommunication and a couple of firings. Then, it was time to hit the festival circuit. This is how I came to release my entire film on Vimeo.
Everyone is under the illusion that the best way to get your story seen is in film festivals, but it simply isn't true. The Internet makes the entire world one big community and, thus, one big audience. So, after spending a couple of hundred of dollars on entry frees and not seeing any returns, I stopped and went back to why I am doing this. Obviously, I'm pretty selfish, as you would be if you want to be a filmmaker. You feel the undying need to tell your story and, just as importantly, to show it to everyone. This is what I am doing now.
"Mind's Eye" was the ultimate learning experience for me. I knew this was going to be a difficult undertaking, but there were times that the high water mark just kept getting more and more over my head.
A first time feature filmmaker with a total budget of $10,000.00, a cast and crew of seasoned professionals and inexperienced first-timers, a multi-location all-location shoot in just 15 days. There are stories with more difficult variables and more headbangingly brutal moments than this one, but this one is mine.
This is my first feature and it won't be my last. This is the first rung on the ladder and I want to see how high I can get. I'm not going to be a hypocrite and suggest that I'm not looking for money and I will release everything I do for free. The more detailed the vision, the more capital you need to make it, it seems. I, like many, would love to quit the 9 to 5 job and create for a living, but that is a process in of itself. To accomplish this, I want to give all of you the opportunity to watch "Mind's Eye" and, hopefully, to spread the word about it. Love it? Hate it? Whatever, as long as you see it. Without an audience, a movie (or a song, a book or any other creative work) is like a little secret that you hide in the attic. It may not be an undiscovered Picasso, but maybe it may be priceless to someone for some reason. How will you ever know unless you bring it out for the world to see?
I really want to thank my entire cast and crew for joining me on this journey, a group of men and women who will always have my undying gratitude and appreciation for everything they did, especially my production manager/first AD/all around superhero Laurie Granberg. If organization is the difference maker, she was my ace in the hole.
Finally, I want to thank all of you who decide to watch "Mind's Eye." If anything, I hope it inspires those of you with something to show that there really is nothing there to stop you.
