“The Mantises Are Flipping. (PS I’ll Have Whatever They’re Having)” investigates reactions and relationships to sound and explores various dualities through movement. The sound provides an awkward landscape, punctuation, crescendo, and ranges from pleasurable to uncomfortable. At certain points in the work the dancers contribute sounds of varying lengths, rhythmic complexity, intention, and volume. The dancers work with contrasting movement dynamics, as well as creating polyrhythmic movement where the top and bottom halves of the body are doing two separate dynamics and rhythms. The work also delves into themes of sanity versus insanity and the nature of opposites. This first performance of this work was in July 2012 at ICA Boston, as a culmination of the SummerStages Dance Festival Choreographic Fellowship at Concord Academy. This piece was created by Teresa Fellion in collaboration with composer/musician Ryan Edwards and festival dancers Naoko Brown, Maurice Dowell, Meghan Marley, Olivia Naegele, Stephanie Reeves, Lindsey Ridgeway, Megan Ross, Meredith Stapleton, Alex Vizzi, and Rebecca Brill Weitz. Special thanks to BodyStories: Teresa Fellion Dance company members Corey Bliss, Daniel Chenoweth, Nicole Kadar, and Madeline Wilcox for assisting in this process.
