The first time I saw Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens was in 2005 at Southpaw in Park Slope. It was at a record release party for Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings' new album "Naturally," and at that time Naomi went by Naomi Davis. I had never heard of her and it would be another two or so years before her first full-length would come out, but as soon as she took the stage, myself and the rest of the audience were immediately uplifted by her presence. Though the backbone of her music is religious, she's always delivered a message that anyone can get behind; the message of love. Eight years later, she's performing every Friday night at the Fat Cat in West Village to all different kinds of people, and every time I've been there to see her, her music leaves the room grinning.
