On our way back from Sail Rock this friday we ran into a massive pile of rubbish floating around in the middle of the sea. In the midst off all the wood, plastic and fishing nets we spotted a trapped turtle. Led by our boatmaster Jonathan three dive professionals quickly jumped in, in an attempt to rescue the poor turtle. After quite a few minutes of cutting (the turtle was really entangled and we had to work carefully not to harm it further) the turtle was free. We quickly made a decision there and then to bring the turtle back to Koh Tao as we feared it would return to the rubbish if we released it straight away. An hour later we arrived at Shark Island and the turtle was happy to return to the sea.
We we're really lucky to be there at just the right time this day, and the turtle made it unharmed back into the sea. We would still like to remind you, not all turtle's are this lucky and the pollution of our seas are a big worldwide problem for both marine life and humans. Please take care of your trash when you visit Koh Tao as it's easy for it to end up into the sea if not properly disposed off.
