THE LAUGHING WOMAN
(aka The Frightened Woman / Femina Ridens)
Dir: Piero Schivazappa, 1969.
86 min. Italy.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1ST - 10PM
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21ST - 10PM
One of Italy's most deliciously sleazy sexploitation romps (while also infused with an undercurrent of feminist film ideals), this heady battle of the sexes boasts gorgeous set designs (including a Freudian-charged coup de grâce piece worthy of Jodorowsky) and a fiendish desire to please the viewer with increasingly bizarre and dangerous sex games.
The beautifully sensuous Dagmar Lassander stars as Maria, the living sex toy of Dr. Sayer (Philippe Leroy) who delights in luring women to his ultra space-age bachelor pad and killing them at the point of orgasm. Sayer’s prolonged campaign of sadomasochistic degradation pushes Maria right to the edge of death, but the spell she casts on him will lead to the most extraordinary climax of a lifetime!
Originally distributed by soft core legend Randley Metzger in a maligned cut, Spectacle presents the restored, uncut version of this kitschy 60s psychedelic erotica-fest.
"Imagine an alternate universe where Stanley Kubrick was relegated to doing low-budget giallo films… the result would end up something like this: impeccably framed, beautifully designed, with cunning performances and a sly sense of humor… The Laughing Woman is perhaps the great lost pop-art film, and certainly one of the most beautiful films in the world of sexploitation." -SF Cult
