The video was realized in dynamic workflow at the collectif DADOFONIC during approximately two months. The initial input came from Lelita Almeida; soon Nathalie Dumont was motivated to join the work group. These two artists and actresses of the ensemble hence worked on the project as a team.
As the team was fixed, we started to brainstorm on the idea. We were sure to use drawings as way of expression and had the rough concept of hair styles developing over time. Having agreed to do a stop motion animation the two artists began to create tons of sketches. Styles upon styles upon styles. At the same time we figured out how we actually could realize such a project with our means and only limited previous experience in animation. To facilitate the creative work flow we decided to use silhouettes as the base for the further drawings. Lelita drew the outline of Nathalie’s head with a black marker and vice versa. After that step the artists used charcoal to let the hair grow (and rubber to cut it). As the camera could only be used day-wise a bumby look couldn’t be avoided despite using a tripod. During the process the work continuously was reflected and thus the drawings were steady fed by new ideas. After over 1,000 photographs and several weeks of work, the oeuvre was finished and added a new project to the collectif’s wide-ranging portfolio.
Enjoy and reflect, any feedback is welcome.
