The ‘Grrlz’ work is an examination of social norms based on my experiences as a young woman. This video called 'Tweakie' is one part of this series.
The desire on my part to be strong in my imagination led me into a confrontation with correct and incorrect behaviors and my identity as a woman and young girl.
Titles of the five Grostesques images define these illicit behaviors: casual, shameless, deliberate, provocative and incessant.
Grrlz is said with a growl, but the term is angry and celebratory at the same time.
These images are painted using digital paint brushes and video frames. They comment on caricature and cartooning and they reference portraiture from the Medieval and Renaissance, and 17th Century Baroque.
The playful innocence and dress-up beside grotesquerie and a fearful balancing act, construct a space of conceptually expressionist drama. The work creates a female presence that both fills and empties the mind and through this mannerist means transcends cultural binds, emerging self-empowered.
