Through a USDA Special Projects Grant from 2004-2008, Dr. Jane Heinig, University of California-Davis conducted research on baby behavior, and found documented evidence that when parents understand their infants’ cues, they can meet the babies’ needs appropriately, resulting in: an increase in exclusive breastfeeding and a decrease in formula feeding and overfeeding. From 2009 and 2010, Dr. Heinig and staff conducted staff training for 3500 staff in the 84 California WIC local agencies.
