Abu Garcia Orra Inshore Reel on Veritas Rod
10.06.12 - I always tell people, I love fishing from a kayak... but I HATE paddling. I've been eyeballing the X-fish SUP for a while now and the main thing that interested me about it was that it was motorized and you can steer with the seat. I took a real close look at their set-up and decided to rig it up myself on my KC Kayak. It's a relatively simple concept but there are a lot of steps and tweaking involved. Overall, its disconnecting the controls of a trolling motor and attaching a T-head. Connect one side of the T-head to one side of the swivel seat with rope, then do the same for the other side. Now when you turn your seat... the motor turns as well. The last thing is to extend the wires from the motor to where ever you want your controls (ideally right by your seat). You can keep the controls as it is but I decided to take it apart and put it in a box with a washing machine knob. I took it for a test drive at Chocolate Bay and it was awesome. It was my first time there and I finally caught my first slot Redfish of the season. To top it off, I ended up catching a Speckled Trout and a Flounder for a full blown Texas Slam! I've been so consumed with this project, that I have already upgrade the motor to a 50 lb thrust (30 lbs as seen in this video) and improved the set up even more. I'll be posting a video walk through of my finalized set-up if anyone wants to check it out.
