With the recent passage of the Affordable Care Act and the Maryland Health Improvement and Health Disparities Reduction Act, environmental justice advocates have an opportunity to leverage these laws to address environmental justice concerns. These new laws provide an opportunity to engage medical providers and health practitioners in the use of the environmental justice frame to holistically assess and address public health issues and environmental health disparities. In this session, panelists will discuss how these two new laws can be used to address environmental justice issues and health disparities in the region. They will provide examples from their work on how the environmental justice frame can be used to help with the implementation of these laws. They will discuss how these laws can be implemented to achieve health equity, discuss challenges, and engage the audience in a discussion in how they can work with health policy experts to make sure they these laws benefit vulnerable and underserved populations in the region.
