I wanted to see for myself what these cornstarch monsters were all about. The mixture of cornstarch and water makes a liquid that has the unique property that it acts like a solid when it is under pressure. The shaking movement of the speaker causes the mixture to take on properties of a solid and it forms into all sorts of interesting shapes.
I mixed in some UV reactive dye into the mix and shined a black light on it for much of the time which gives it that glow. The speaker was driven from a Max MSP program with a single sine wave. The mixture seemed to respond best from around 22-30 Hz. Most of the sound you hear comes from non-linearities creating upper partials caused by distortion.
