Update: There is now a more recent video with updates on this project at vimeo.com/18840775.
This interview was filmed in 2009. It is a great introduction into the concept of Freedom Fone. What do you do if you're trying to get a message into an area like Zimbabwe and the authorities won't grant you access to the local airwaves, either because of political reasons or because you are a minority group which doesn't qualify for attention by the state controlled media. One answer may be freedomphone, a piece of software that's being given away to encourage people to set up their own interactive voice response system. I see they are testing a beta version in Harare now. freedomfone.org has a blog which is worth following, and the main site in Zimbabwe is also active. kubatana.net/
