(2011) These were the opening titles for my feature film, "Seen," which explores how we value ourselves by how we are judged by the people close to us. Inspired by the Japanese manga, 'Kuruoshii Tsukiboshi' by Moto Hagio, "Seen" is the story of a young dancer - Rei, who doubts his own existence until he catches a photography student named Ari, secretly taking photos of him. Their friendship allows Rei to see himself for the first time but Ari's unlikely success takes his gaze away from him.
I thought the story of a ballet dancer in Tokyo would make an interesting visual juxtaposition. Dancers were shot on blue screen and composited onto photographs of the urban landscape. Each frame of the sequence was digitally "oil painted" in Corel Painter. The frames were then reassembled in AfterEffects to create one long movie.
