Global Maternal Health Conference 2013

New WHO PPH guidelines was discussed. Described was the background and evidence for change and indicators for quality of care. Armbruster described the active management of third stage of labor (AMSTL) Trial that aimed to determine effectiveness of a partial or simplified package compared to full AMSTL package. It found protocols were not always adhered to with either package, and the controlled cord traction is a needed component of AMSTL. In addition, oxytocin usage needs strengthening and surveillance of women for AMSTL. Durocher described the use of misoprostol for PPH in abortion settings. Her work in Africa and Latin America suggest that misoprostol can be used in rural areas, allowing for greater access and reduced burden on the poorest of women.
