My family has been carrying around the old 8mm movie reels shot by my grandfather for decades. Outside a few expensive laserscanning facilities the equipment used to transfer these old home movies to video are pieces of crap. Still, it's better to have a bad version that you can see than a "who knows?" version you can't.
I took a crack at enhancing this bit of film from around 1972 when I was about a year old, maybe a little older. My grandfather had this Bell & Howell wind-up 8mm camera that was pretty neat. I ended up busting the spring mechanism rehearsing shots for a magnum-opus ninja action movie I intended to make with my brothers when I was about eleven :(
It still looks "bad" but at least now it doesn't have that haze and you can actually read enough detail to see that my father had very hairy arms. I'll have to take a whack at this again with NeatVideo if I ever decide to get it.
