The Spirit Ranch is a special place in New Mexico where people go to experience equine assisted therapy. Working with horses and the fantastic staff at the ranch; active duty military and veterans feel relief from post traumatic stress, troubled kids learn to cope with daily pressures and military kids learn to handle deployment of a parent.
Through interviews and by filming an actual session, the process is explored with both staff and veterans. The results of this process and nothing less than amazing as captured through the eye of our cameras.
Although skeptical in the beginning, the entire crew was moved by this experience and are now all fans of this unique therapy. We shot this documentary as favor to a friend and it almost was over before it started. Originally we planned to film returning combat veterans undergoing therapy from William Beaumont Army Medical Center but could not obtain permission to film the soldiers due to strict rules preventing photography of soldiers undergoing treatment for PTSD (or related issues). We were able to overcome this problem by finding veterans from a local group who were no longer undergoing treatment but still suffering from long term effects. The results of their session speaks volumes and identify the Spirit Ranch as a very special place.
