Press Conference at Austin City Hall, Austin Texas - February 13, 2013 (starts at 2 minutes 14 seconds in.)
Citizens came together to oppose an Austin City Council resolution to be voted on Feb. 14th at City Council - a resolution that would lead to creation of a board to govern Austin Energy that is appointed and not directly elected by the public. The nominees would be chosen by a corporate headhunter and citizens wouldn't be able to vote for them or veto them, opening the door to industry insiders and special interests.
"Keep the Power in Our Hands" and "Keep Austin Energy Accountable / NO Un-Elected Utility Board" were the signs people carried. The group wants direct accountability of the utility so that it can remain green - pursuing energy efficiency and renewable energy - and keep programs in place to assist low-income customers.
