John the beloved, the bishop of Ephesus, was arrested and exiled on Patmos for proclaiming Jesus. He wrote this longest of his epistles to comfort and encourage a church that had been ravaged by false prophets and was enduring the persecution from both the Jewish and Greek/Roman worlds. John's most encouraging words were, "We shall be like Him for we shall see Him as He is." It is at the moment of Jesus' appearing that we are transformed to be like Him! All the suffering of this age can't be compared to the glory of the age to come!
