This film is a free resource given by AKT Productions Ltd to the construction industry as part of World Suicide Prevention Day.
Every working day the construction industry loses 2 workers to suicide in the UK and Ireland.
That is an unacceptably high statistic, but suicide has long been an issue in the construction industry, more so than in many other sectors, because it is neither easily detected nor easily countered.
Working alongside our regular film crew, Ambanja Films (who generously donated their services for free), and one of our construction clients, BAM Construct UK (who kindly let us shoot on one of their sites), AKT has produced this short film to raise awareness of suicides in the construction industry and support those who are suffering with mental ill-health by letting them know that help is available.
The result is a freely downloadable resource which aims to help those affected by mental ill-health find a way back from their own personal edge. It also encourages people who notice that one of their work colleagues might be experiencing mental ill-health to talk to them, and be willing to listen, which is sometimes all it takes to make a (potentially life saving) difference.
Our hope is that people will download On the Edge and use it as the starting point for some difficult but essential conversations, which will hopefully lead to a reduction in the number of suicides on construction sites throughout the UK and Ireland.
You never know the significance that one conversation might have. It might literally mean the difference between life and death. Please don't walk by, start a conversation and be the difference.
On the Edge is endorsed by the construction industry’s charity, The Lighthouse Club, which is the only charity providing emotional, physical and financial wellbeing support to construction workers and their families.
