Our proposal for the re-invention of the pay phone is driven by two competing aims: the desire to pack as much program and function into a single device as possible and the opposite urge: to reduce the footprint of the phone booth literally and figuratively. We aim to create a new “off the grid,” self-sustaining resource that builds on the way people communicate now while envisioning the continued evolution of connective technologies. The proposal takes “everything” – a range of functional and urban strategies and conflates them into “nothing” -- a single bent sheet that folds up from the sidewalk.
