How do we re-present women in circus arts?
Gynoïdes Project is a feminine approach to circus arts. In 2011, the first so called Gynoïdes, were a core of circus artists graduated from the circus program at the University of Dance and Circus in Stockholm under the supervision of artistic director Marie-Andrée Robitaille. The project has welcome since, collaborations with other circus women and contributors of all horizons. Gynoïdes Project investigates the question of women in circus, circus as a vehicle to understand and experience the place of women in society. Gynoïdes project studies concepts such as: the relation to the audience, mode of production and diffusion, motivation and format of the circus arts, what they consist of and how they can be re-defined.
Through investigations, “bêta test” the project examine the foundation of the circus expression; what if there were no costume, no ”extra” props, no scenography, no story? What if there were our only body and simply our own circus based feminine energy? What lies beyond the demonstration of skills? What does our abnormal circus actions suggest, what does the circus apparatus has to say? What does circus women has to say?
The Gynoïdes Project interacts with educational and research institutions, with organisations and members of the circus community, with contributors from scientific, social and artistic fields. Gynoïdes Project is an evolving participating initiative that uses dialogues, data collections, art projects and researches to analyze the question of women in circus art, how it can be understood and transform.
