Meet Matt Nelson- P&H Sponsored Coach for the 2013 Bay of Fundy Sea Kayak Symposium
Matt has been learning from the ocean for most of his adult life. In his late 20’s he and his wife, Djuna, sailed their small, engineless sailboat from the Pacific Northwest to Mexico, out to Hawaii, and back to Orcas Island, WA—a voyage of about 7000 miles. After their landfall on Orcas, Matt eventually met Bryan Smith, Shawna Franklin and Leon Somme at Body Boat Blade and within a year began coaching for BBB, progressing as a coach and paddler. Since then, he has delved into whitewater, surf kayaking, rock gardening and expeditions. Matt has also appeared in Bryan Smith’s “Pacific Horizons”, has been involved with other kayaking films, is a P&H Team paddler, and teaches at symposiums internationally. Matt’s most current expedition effort is the Sail 2 Surf project—sailing his 34-foot trimaran to the tidal rapids of BC, Vancouver Is, California, and Baja; surfing standing waves and ocean breaks with both sea and surf kayaks, and raising funds and awareness for environmental stewardship along the way.
