Connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies enable a host of applications for vehicle-to-vehicle communication, vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, and vehicle-to-pedestrian communication — collectively known as vehicle-to-everything (V2X). NCHRP 23-10 focused on the actions taken by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from 2019 through early 2021 to reallocate portions of the 5.9 GHz band away from dedicated use for applications essential for CAVs. This May 2021 presentation summarizes the NCHRP project, describing the FCC actions and the implications of those actions for state departments of transportation.
