Studio: Canal+/Kayenta Productions (2006)
Director: Mark Woods
The “Ca Cartoon” series broadcast on French Television station Canal+ shows “Warner Bros” classic Cartoon shorts between sequences featuring a Donkey called “George” and a Buzzard by the name of “Alfred” - they are Cartoon characters invented for and made famous by this show. In “Ca Cartoon” they appear in a mix of Live-Action and Animation with two 'human' co-stars. This short film features the Animated stars of “Ca Cartoon” - re-designed and in their own totally Animated 'special' seven minute Tex Avery-esque short. It was shown at Christmas 2006 on Canal+.
For the special, the plot surrounds George and Alfreds' decision to enter a TV Talent Contest – along the same lines as “X Factor”. They are both irrationally convinced that their (as yet undiscovered/non-existent) singing talents will prove to be the path to stardom.
When my good friend Mark Woods rang to say he was Directing and would I like to work in Paris for three months as one of two Senior Animators I said “Yes” immediately. Between July and October 2006 – Mark, Rob Newman and myself had a fantastic – if exhausting time working with some extremely talented Animators and crew. It was so good, we threw a party for the 'crew' near the end of the job at the studio – which ended late at our by that point, favourite/near-by Bar. It was, as that last sentence suggested, the perfect opportunity to re-learn/practise/improve French and to re-build a totally unhealthy tolerance to “Cafe-Culture”. Vive la France! (ou quelquechose).
