Constantine the Great made a form of Christianity the state religion of Rome. This was a man made religion, not the biblical faith of the Apostles. His empire became what is known as the Byzantine Empire. It competed with the outright paganism of Rome. Over time, Rome itself was conquered by Germanic tribes in 410 A.D. From that time onward, a competing brand of "Christianity" known as Roman Catholicism grew in strength. The hybrid of paganism blended with Christianity continues to infect the Church of Jesus Christ to this very day.
