"Break-up of the Endurance" tells how Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship, The Endurance, was crushed by ice pressure and the crew was forced to abandon ship. Frank Hurley's archival footage — licensed from the British Film Institute — of the ship beset in the frozen Antarctic sea ice are an extraordinary record.
The video program is part of the AMNH exhibit, "Shackleton", which documents one of the greatest tales of survival in expedition history: Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914 voyage to the Antarctic. The video is a mix of Frank Hurley's restored footage and animation that visually explains how the ship was crushed and destroyed by ice pressure. Diary excerpts tell of the events that led to Shackleton's order to abandon ship.
