In 2011, the Northwest District Ethnic Ministries Task Force (EMTF), at the request of the Director of Mission Training Center determined that the most effective use for an LWML grant (provided for the LAP/MTC Training Program) would be to translate the “Christian Faith” course into simple English. This was because it is the foundational course in Lutheran doctrine, and immigrant groups were requesting simple English resources. The group proposed that several language groups be served in this important endeavor. Toward this end, Dr. Herb Hoefer, chair of EMTF was appointed to write up notes on Luther’s Catechism in Simple English. The four chief parts covered are: The Apostles Creed, The Ten Commandments, the Doctrine of God, and the Sacraments and Confession/Absolution. Pastors and Deacons from five language groups in the Northwest District were asked to give a video commentary of the simple English course for leaders in their native languages: Spanish, Nuer (Sudanese), Amharic (Ethiopian), Burmese, and Vietnamese.
This project was funded by the Oregon District Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) through the partner activity of the Center for Applied Lutheran Leadership (CALL), Mission Training Center, Inc., and the Northwest District of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.
