Panic spreads as magnitude-5 earthquake rattles southern Italy. According to NBC News, panic spread in Italy as a magnitude 5 earthquake struck in the country's south. The Italian Geophysics Institute said at least 14 other tremors followed the initial earthquake. An elderly man who lived near the tremor's epicenter died of a heart attack. News agencies reported scenes of panic in the hospital and said many inhabitants of Mormanno and surrounding towns had come out in the streets. Police and firefighters were surveying the area for further damage.
Hurricane Sandy kills 41 people in the Caribbean. According to Reuters, Hurricane Sandy, a late-season Atlantic cyclone that threatens to be one of the worst storms to hit the Northeast in decades, slogged slowly northward after killing at least 41 people in the Caribbean. Forecasters said wind damage, widespread and extended power outages and coastal and inland flooding were anticipated across a broad swath of the densely populated U.S. East Coast when Sandy comes ashore early next week. Forecast models show it will have all of the ingredients to morph into a massive and potentially catastrophic "super storm."
Fighting in Syria shatters fragile truce. According to Reuters, a powerful car bomb exploded in Damascus on Friday and forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad clashed with rebels across Syria as a truce intended to mark a Muslim religious holiday unraveled and activists reported at least 70 deaths. State television said the "terrorist car bomb" had killed five people and wounded 32. Fighting erupted around Syria earlier as both sides violated the Eid al-Adha ceasefire arranged by international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi.
