My partner Frank Wallace and I had the good fortune of doing a residency at the Summartónar Festival in the Faroe Islands during our 2011 Duo LiveOak European concert tour. Our schedule did not leave time for photographing, except for these shots, taken when we were on boats getting from one island to another for our concerts. The Faroes are a group of islands in the North Sea, north of the Shetlands. I had lost both parents recently, and the stark beauty of the landscape, a polyphonic trio of sky, water and slower moving land spoke to me as I photographed these images. To that dance I have added a soulful flute improv (medieval tunes as the “ground”) on my favorite bansuri flute, made by Deba Prosad Banerjee.
