My mom is Russian. Now she lives in a small apartment in Maryland. In Russia New Year is a very special holiday, similar to Thanksgiving in America. The holiday is non-religious, for everybody. It is supposed to bring the family together, to exchange news and views, to have late night dinner which starts at 11 pm (to say good bye to the old year and to reflect on the pastt. The dinner is over - when the countdown strikes midnight which brings traditional glass of champagne and best wishes for the upcoming year. Then traditional New Year concert from Moscow called "Ogonyok" (Little Flame) which starts at midnight and lasts until 3 am, available from Russian TV Network. Best Russian dancers, singers and comedians show up to perform, and in recent years lots of foreign celebs (mostly European and Asian) come to participate in Ogonyok.
On this video on Jan 1 mom is mad at me. She is watching TV and ignores me. I committed a big crime against the tradition. I could not make it the last night and visited her on Jan 1. I made this video of her which she also ignored. Then I hugged and kissed her and left. We made up over the phone after a few days. Since then I never left her alone on the New Year night unless I was traveling overseas.
