In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Africana Studies at Barnard College, the Africana Studies Program, the Consortium for Critical Interdisciplinary Studies, and the Barnard Center for Research on Women organized The Worlds of Shange Conference. For two days in February 2013, the conference brought together scholars and artists shaping scholarly and popular conversations about African American arts and letters and gender in the African Diaspora for a thorough examination of Ntozake Shange's diverse body of work.
The conference kicked off on February 14, 2013 with Performing Shange, featuring Barnard students performing excerpts from Ntozake Shange's work, led by music producer and BCRW Alumnae Fellow Ebonie Smith '07. Performers include Katherine Bergstrom CC '14, Gabrielle Davenport '15, Victoria Durden '15, Elena Dudum '15, Sarah Esser '15, and Simone Sobers '13.
