When we planned this weeks pick-your-own adventure and our daughter asked what kind of apples there would be and then answered her own question with "oh I know, we can check the stickers on them!" we knew this trip to an orchard was long overdue!
We packed hot cross buns fresh from the oven and headed north to the little village of Coatesville and Windmill Orchards. Graham Jensen has been growing peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots, apples an pears in his beautiful orchard for over 30 years. You'll need to check the orchard (09 415 9497) beforehand to see what fruit is available for pyo. Our trip was in early Autumn and the trees were laden with apples and pears with plenty within easy reach of little hands. We took our own baskets which were quickly filled by our enthusiastic young pickers. We then had morning tea amongst the apple trees and munched on the freshest apples and pears.
It costs $3 per adult to pick fruit but this cost is then deducted from the cost of your fruit ($3 a kilo).
