In my experience, practicing like this helps me to let go and surrender to the guidance of Prana, or life force. I experience Prana as an active living intelligence within that guides my movements.
You can see this most clearly when I'm in Downward Dog. While my foundation is firm through the hands and the feet, my spine is moving spontaneously, freeing itself up from old blockages and obstructions.
My spine is fused at L4/5 (I had a spinal fusion when I was 16 years old), and it's taking time to release my hamstrings, pelvis, and lower back. With this kind of practice, it is happening though!
