Welcome to Montreat Conference Center. We hope you enjoy your stay.
Montreat is a Christian hospitality organization. We began a long time ago as a destination to explore and grow ones faith in a community. We’ve done a lot of growing and changing ourselves from the start, but our mission has stayed consistent: to serve people of all traditions and beliefs along their spiritual journey.
The Montreat Valley has three individual institutions. The Mountain Retreat Association, now know as Montreat Conference Center began in 1897. By the 60s, the MRA had incorporated into The Town of Montreat and by the 70s had split with Montreat College to form two separate institutions. The word “Montreat” can mean any of these establishments.
As you drive through the iconic Montreat Gate, you’ll realize some things pretty quickly. Montreat is a small town. Life generally moves slower. We get outside more, drive slower, and try to keep our environment safe, clean, and fun. (2600 acres are part of the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy!).
Your first stop should be Assembly Inn, the historic, stone building overlooking Lake Susan. Our front desk staff at the Inn is here to help! They’ve got you covered for Galax Dining Room meal tickets, hiking maps, and answering your Montreat questions.
Now, take a stroll around Lake Susan. The lake and the spillway have been a focal point of Montreat basically forever. It's named after three generations named Susan. (Plus it’s home to cute wildlife!)
Notice, there is no downtown Montreat (You can get your “city” fix from nearby Black Mountain). But the Montreat Store, located next to the spillway in Moore Center. The store has snacks and gifts for you and all your friends back home.
And the circular building across the street is Anderson Auditorium, our largest and most memoried meeting space. It has held conferences for adults and youth alike since its rebuilding in 1942 (The first one burned down. Yikes!)
We serve a variety of guests with different interests throughout the seasons. In the spring, people come for personal sabbath when the rhododendrons bloom and the ducklings hatch. In the summer, people dance at the Barn, get energized, rock hop in Flat Creek, and relax on the (many) porches. In the fall people hike, rest, and watch the leaves change into beautiful reds and oranges. We have awesome, year-round conferences, as our name suggests, but we also host many guest and retreat groups (come up for a nice getaway!). You don’t have to attend a conference to come to Montreat!
We are so glad you made it here, and we really hope you feel welcomed and appreciated during your stay. Don’t be afraid to ask us questions, just look for the green name badges. Check out our website for all the latest and greatest.
Welcome to Montreat.
