While we might have spent the last two years conquering Los Angeles, New York, New Orleans, Washington D.C., Las Vegas, Orlando and Savannah, it would be a pretty heady stretch to qualify any of those week-long forays into travelling madness as being actual “vacations.” If anything, they’ve been more like a survey of how much the pre-middle-age psyche can handle when it comes to bombardment of all five collective senses, which—without anything resembling casual regret—left us primed for an experience with a bit less… bite.
And that would be this trip. If polled, the author’s previous incarnation—say, one from about three weeks ago—likely would have made some avuncular joke about cruises being for snowbirds and families with no taste for the open road; however, he couldn’t be judged too harshly on the principles of his ignorance. The poor sucker simply didn’t know any better. He couldn’t have seen what I’ve seen, tasted what I’ve tasted, had the conversations that the bounty of the last few days has brought on in spades, or experienced the sober quiet of the Carribbean Sea at daybreak, tasting a dry, warm wind on his lips as he watches the first sunrise he’s ever seen over a perfectly flatlined, nautical horizon.
Having done so, and with the ability to send a message in a bottle back through the folds of time and space, I would share the following with him: you will see, and you will hear, and while you may not talk… you’ll have a blast boiling down seven insane days into a single buzz-reel review of what its like to see the Caribbean in all its frantic, soul-toasting glory. You may not agree with the notion of a cruise being travel in the technical sense, but you will not--notnotnot--regret a moment of it.
Oh, and also: the only reason your Film Club students will let you skip this month’s meeting is because you promised to make this thing for them. Do not tread lightly on that one, 'cause they will NOT be forgetting about it.
