Kentrophoros extracted from sediment of Hausstrand, Sylt (26 June 2012) under compound microscope (phase contrast). These ciliates are covered on their entire upper surface by symbiotic bacteria. The bacteria reduce sulfide and store sulfur globules internally. Scattering of light from the sulfur causes them to look brown/black under transmitted light.
