The elusive whale shark is on many a diver's bucket list. Leading up to this dive trip, I found out that there would be a possibility of whale shark sightings. Excited, I prayed and asked God to send me a whale shark during my trip. The day before our dive, the other 2 groups opted to skip the night dive and go search for a wreck early the next morning instead. My group decided we would try to spot a whale shark at Rayner's Rock instead, a dive site where whale sharks have commonly been spotted.
Arriving at the dive site, we struggle to get into the water, fighting a very rocky boat and rough seas. It seems to most of us that we may end up going back disappointed. 5 minutes into the dive, our DM excitedly signals to us and points ahead. We swim ahead and slowly, a dark shape quickly resolves into a whale shark, slowly swimming away. I'm pretty sure all of us stopped breathing at that point, too shocked and amazed to do anything. It was pretty surreal. We try to give chase but realize the futility of the effort as the creature slowly disappears into the distance.
We were the 6 very special people to spot the whale shark that weekend. People say that i'm super duper lucky; I say I know Jesus loves me very much.
