Real time HD (1080p 16:9) video with the "Ring of Fire" directly over Shiprock.
Harry B. invited me on an astronomy expedition to image the annular eclipse of May 20th, 2012. Harry calculated the location that we would need to be at, in order to see this rare "Ring of Fire" event directly above Shiprock in the Navajo Nation.
I apologize for the poor audio quality. we were not mic'd.
Shiprock is the remnant plug of a volcano, and there are several such volcano necks in the region. Shiprock is the most spectacular, and it is easily visible from 20+ miles away. It rises over 1700 feet from the desert floor.
In the Navajo tongue, the name for this place is roughly translated to English as "Rock with Wings" and it is a sacred place.
For good depictions of the geology of this region including beautiful cap rocks on hoodoos, see these other YouTuber videos: youtube.com/watch?v=aAG8Lib-UOk and youtube.com/watch?v=72UofIf3kjk
