John R. Fleming, donor and advisory council chairman of the College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin, speaks about the importance of giving back.
State funding previously provided 47 percent of the university's budget. Today, that number is only 13 percent.
Many people think that UT is rich because the university receives revenue from the state-owned Permanent University Fund (PUF). PUF receives revenue from oil and mineral interests in West Texas, but that money supports 18 institutions and six agencies in the Texas A&M and University of Texas Systems. The PUF is part of the Available University Fund (AUF), which provides only 8 percent of funding to UT-Austin today.
