The church in Ephesus was commended for its commitment to serving, to doctrinal truth and to the person of Jesus. But in the midst of its busyness they had forgotten their first love, Jesus. It's remarkable that only 2 of the 7 churches (Pergamum and Thyatira) were scolded for false doctrine. Far more common was a lack of spirituality, of fervency, of closeness to the Lord. That's what the glorified Christ wanted to talk about most. Doctrinal error isn't our major problem. Most evangelical churches are sound – sound asleep. We know the written word very well, but aren't in love with the living Word. We've exchanged good things for first things. How do we keep first things first? How do we keep our passion and zeal for Jesus alive and vibrant?
