December 1976, Rochdale, Lancashire. Peter Tatham, a steeplejack, talks about laddering and climbing factory chimneys. The 150 foot (46 metre) chimney in the pictures is part of the former Salford city incinerator. Peter laddered it that September. Then, with a hole cut in its side at the bottom so that rubble could be removed, he worked his way down it from the top, sitting astride the wall, taking it apart piecemeal and dropping each piece down inside the shaft.
