What is the responsibility of designers to obese people? As a previously marginalized but increasingly recognized and accommodated population, obese people have emotional and practical needs that offer specific design challenges.
Bridgeable’s team of social scientists, industrial designers, and healthcare professionals set out to investigate this callenge by conducting a long-term internal project that focused on the human experience. Leveraging leading-edge social science practices and ethnography, the team created Misfit, the first in a series of Bridgeable documentaries intended to reveal the process of designing for real-world needs. Based on the insights brought to life in Misfit, the team was able to confront preconceptions and biases around what design should provide to a target population to prototype seating concepts that are inspirational and realistic.
