Then one day while sitting waiting for a train and enjoying one of the many talented musicians that inhabit the NYC subway system… I thought, “Wait a second this is literally an underground music scene.” I began documenting the various musicians I came across while traveling throughout my week. It reminded me of one of my favorite short films Sax, Cantor, Riff by Julie Dash where the wonders of music and the diverse characters of the New York City subway are brought to light. I thought this little video can be my way of paying homage to the talents that provide musical enjoyment to the patrons of New York’s Underground, whether a full band selling CDs or a lone individual playing his cello.
