The Harmonic Series (theharmonicseries.net) is a collection of machines, software, sculptures and prints that explore musical harmony. Major, minor and diminished chords are represented by Lissajous figures, unveiling a tight relationship between musical and visual harmony.
The Machine. Two speakers are placed perpendicularly, with two small mirrors attached to them in X and Y axes. A laser is pointed at the first mirror, reflected by the second and finally projected on the wall. As the speakers vibrate at the frequency of the voices, a representation of the interval between them is generated. This is an electronic and interactive reinterpretation of an experiment conducted by French mathematician Jules Lissajous in the nineteenth century.
This is an ongoing project, started by Manuela Donoso and Luisa Pereira at NYU’s ITP during the 2012 Fall term. It was shown at the ITP Winter Show.
