On March 19, 2013 the Newark (NJ) Environmental Commission and the New Jersey Environmental Justice Alliance jointly sponsored a public meeting to discuss a proposal to raise the Bayonne Bridge to allow a major expansion of Port Newark and Port Elizabeth. The Panama Canal is being widened to accommodate larger ships, and those ships cannot presently pass beneath the Bayonne Bridge, preventing them from using Port Newark. The plan is to raise the roadbed of the bridge, to accommodate the larger ships and allow a major expansion of Port Newark and Port Elizabeth. Residents of Newark are concerned about the health effects of added pollution from the expanded port. Kim Gaddy chairs the Newark Environmental Commission.
